Why Does Rebooting Your Router Fix So Much?
It feels like magic, but there's real engineering behind it: memory leaks, an overflowing NAT table, IP lease conflicts, heat, and firmware bugs. Here's what a 60-second reboot actually clears.

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?” is a punchline — but it’s also genuinely the first thing every support agent says, because it genuinely works. A reboot resolves a huge share of slow and dropped-connection problems. The reason isn’t magic; it’s that your router is a tiny always-on computer, and several very specific things go wrong the longer it runs. A power cycle clears all of them at once.
1. Memory leaks pile up
Like any computer, a router runs software that allocates memory — and imperfect software doesn’t always give it back. Over days and weeks of uptime, these memory leaksslowly consume the router’s limited RAM. With less free memory, it processes traffic more slowly, drops connections, and eventually chokes. A reboot wipes the memory clean and hands the router a fresh start.
2. The NAT/connection table overflows
Every time a device in your home talks to something on the internet, your router tracks that conversation in a NAT (Network Address Translation) table. Modern homes open thousands of these connections — every app, tab, smart bulb, and background sync. The table has a finite size, and stale entries don’t always get cleaned up fast enough. When it fills, new connections stall or fail even though your line is fine. Rebooting empties the table instantly.
3. IP address leases get tangled
Your router hands out local IP addresses to your devices (via DHCP), and your ISP hands a public IP to your modem. These are leases— temporary, with expiry times — and occasionally they conflict, expire awkwardly, or get into a bad state where a device can’t get a valid address. A reboot forces everything to renew its lease cleanly, and often gets you a fresh public IP from your ISP, which clears a whole class of connectivity glitches.
4. Heat quietly throttles performance
Routers are usually passively cooled, tucked in a cabinet or against a wall, running 24/7. Components get hot, and heat degrades performance and stability — a hot router is a slow, flaky router. 5. Firmware bugs accumulate state
Router firmware isn’t perfect. Small bugs cause tiny bits of bad state to build up — a wedged process, a confused wireless driver, a counter that rolled over. None of it is fatal on its own, but it adds up into the vague “everything feels slow” sensation. A reboot resets the software to a known-good starting point and clears the accumulated cruft.
6. A clean handshake with your ISP
When your modem and router power back up, they renegotiate the connection with your provider from scratch — re-syncing signal levels, re-authenticating, and re-establishing the link. If the original connection had degraded (common after a brief outage or line noise), this fresh handshake often restores full speed that had silently dropped.
Why the 30-second wait matters
This is the part people skip. Cutting power for only a second doesn’t give the hardware time to fully discharge or the ISP time to release the old session.
